Hardware Introduction

This chapter describes the hardware design of the device.

Hardware Overview

Part Description
LoRaWAN® Antenna Connector Allows connection of external antennas to enhance wireless communication range and reliability.
Cellular Antenna Connector
SIM Slot Allows to insert a SIM card to connect to the cellular network.
Micro SD Slot Allows to insert a micro SD card to expand the storage.
Reset Button Allows to reset the device to factory defaults. For details see LED Patterns.
Tip: SIM slot, micro SD slot, and reset button can only be found after opening the top cover.

Part Description
LED Indicator See LED Patterns.
USB Type-C Used for device console or device power supply.
Ethernet Port (PoE) Allows connection to an ISP for network access, and supports the PoE PD feature, enabling it to receive power over Ethernet.

Powering Options

This chapter describes the powering supply option supported by UG56 gateways. Please select one of the following options to power the gateway.

Powered by Active PoE
The Ethernet port can receive power by connecting to an 802.3af standard PoE switch or PoE injector.

Powered by USB Type-C
The gateway can be powered by a USB Type-C port (5V DC/2A).

Tip: If multiple power sources are connected at the same time, the device will primarily use power from the PoE source.

Installation Instructions

This chapter provide instructions on how to install the accessories and the device.

Warning: Before installation, ensure the device is powered off!

SIM Card or Micro SD Card Installation

This section describes how to install a SIM card or a micro SD card into the device. If not needed, please skip this section.

Prerequisites
  • The gateway supports cellular feature (model name includes -Lxxx).
  • A SIM card (Mini-2FF) or a micro SD card.
  • Power off the gateway since it does not supports hot plugging (also called hot swapping).
Steps
  1. Unscrew the top cover of the device.

  2. Insert the SIM card or micro SD card into the corresponding slot in the correct orientation.

  3. Restore the top cover with screws.

Antenna Installation

This section describes how to install the antennas to the device.

Steps:

Rotate antennas into the corresponding antenna connectors. The antennas should be installed vertically, with their magnetic bases attached to a metal surface.
Tip:
  • Keep the antennas away from walls and ensure there are no obstacles around them.
  • For better coverage, it is recommended to position the antennas at a higher location.
  • Place the antennas near windows when used indoors.


Gateway Installation

This section describes how to install the gateway. The gateway supports wall mounting with screws or DIN rail mounting.
Wall Mounting

Prerequisites: Screwdriver, Wall Mount Kit, Wall Mounting Bracket, Bracket Screws. Drill

Steps:

  1. Secure the wall mounting bracket to the gateway using the screws.

  2. Drill four holes in the wall according to the device's wall mounting holes.
  3. Insert the wall plugs into the holes.
  4. Secure the device to the wall plugs using the wall mounting screws.

DIN Rail Mounting
Note: Only new hardware supports DIN rail mounting. Please check with Milesight before purchase.

Prerequisites: 35mm DIN Rail, DIN Rail Clip Kit

Steps:

  1. Secure the DIN rail clip to the device with screws.

  2. Hang the device on the DIN rail.

Access the Gateway

  1. Enable the Wireless Network Connection on your computer, search for the corresponding for Wi-Fi SSID, and connect to it. Default Wi-Fi credentials:

    SSID: Gateway_XXXXXX (last 6 digits of the Wi-Fi MAC address)
    Password: iotpassword

  2. Open a web browser (Chrome is recommended) and type in https://192.168.1.1 to access the web GUI.
  3. Log in to the web GUI using the default credentials:

    Username: admin
    Password: password

  4. After logging the web GUI for the first time, it is necessary to change the default password.

    1. Enter a New Password. The password must contain at least one letter and one number, and be 5 to 31 characters long.
    2. Enter Confirm New Password.
    3. Click Save.
    4. Log in to the web GUI using the new credentials.
