A conventional single-stage thermostat acts like a simple on/off switch: it runs the heating or cooling system at 100% power until the target temperature is reached, then shuts it off completely. A two-stage thermostat, by contrast, selects the most appropriate output level based on actual demand:

  • Heat Mode: Activates heating stages (Stage 1 first, escalating to Stage 2 / AUX as needed).
  • Cool Mode: Activates two-stage cooling, low stage (Y1) first, high stage (Y2) when demand requires.
  • Auto Mode: Automatically switches between heating and cooling based on the ambient temperature, ideal for transitional seasons and buildings with varying occupancy patterns.
  • Emergency Heat Mode: For heat pump systems, bypasses the compressor and activates auxiliary heat only, for use when the heat pump is not operational.
