Solution
SHN developed a Beaver IoT-based real-time monitoring system for long-distance buses that automates data collection and reporting. The architecture integrates a suite of devices: a GPS for location, VS121 for precise passenger counting, EM300-TH for environmental monitoring of cabin conditions, an IP camera, a UG65 LoRaWAN® gateway and a UR35 router.
The GPS sensor and IP camera are connected to the UR35 router via PoE and the UR35 is further linked to the UG65 LoRaWAN® gateway through Ethernet. Using Node-RED on the UG65, commands can be automatically issued to the GPS sensor and IP camera to report GPS data and camera snapshots every minute. At the same time, the UG65 also processes data collected from LoRaWAN® sensors, including passenger counts from the VS121 and in-vehicle temperature and humidity from the EM300-TH.
All data streams from both the UR35 and LoRaWAN® sensors are then integrated within UG65 through Node-RED and forwarded to the Beaver IoT platform. There, the data is synthesized into a Japanese-localized dashboard, providing depot and headquarters staff with immediate visibility into real-time bus locations, passenger counts, cabin temperature and humidity, and minute-by-minute interior snapshots. Furthermore, the solution enables real-time remote access; beyond the visualized data, maintenance staff can securely access the live camera feed directly via a VPN tunnel established by the UR35 router, which utilizes the vehicle's primary network and a secondary SIM card for guaranteed reliability. This integrated system transforms raw data into actionable intelligence, significantly enhancing operational control and passenger service quality.
