Mahkota Medical Centre (MMC), located in the heart of Melaka, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the largest private hospitals in Southern Peninsular Malaysia. Since becoming the first hospital in Melaka to receive JCI accreditation in 2020, MMC has maintained its commitment to international standards for healthcare quality and patient safety, with re-accreditation granted from 2023 to 2026.

To enhance compliance with stringent environmental monitoring requirements, MMC partnered with Resource Data Management Asia (RDMA) to deploy a comprehensive LoRaWAN®-based solution. Utilizing Milesight sensors and gateways, the system monitors temperature and humidity in critical areas such as operating theaters, patient wards, and corridors, ensuring optimal environmental conditions and improved operational efficiency.

Solution

To meet stringent healthcare monitoring requirements, RDMA integrated its BMS platform with an advanced LoRaWAN®-based IoT solution powered by Milesight devices, including AM107 ambience monitoring sensors (now upgraded to AM307 7-in-1 sensors), UG65 gateway, and the UG63 gateway. This end-to-end system enables continuous, real-time environmental monitoring to safeguard patient safety, protect medical equipment, and maintain compliance with regulatory standards.

A total of 53 wireless AM107 sensors were strategically installed across operating theaters, hospital wards, and corridors. Each sensor continuously monitors temperature and humidity — critical parameters for safe and compliant healthcare environments —and transmits data at set intervals via LoRaWAN®.

All sensor data is transmitted via LoRaWAN® to a Milesight UG65 semi-industrial gateway, which supports multi-channel reception and stable long-range communication. To ensure signal reliability throughout the hospital's complex structure, including distant or obstructed areas, a UG63 mini LoRaWAN® gateway was deployed as a signal booster to strengthen signal transmission and extend coverage.

Once received by the UG65, data is securely forwarded to the RDM Data Manager, which processes the information and feeds it into the RDM BMS Dashboard. Through the dashboard, hospital staff can access real-time environmental data, receive correction actions. This ensures that healthcare spaces remain safe, comfortable, and compliant with regulatory standards.

The system is configured with predefined thresholds — for instance, triggering alerts when the temperature exceeds 25°C. Once a threshold is breached, the system automatically issues notifications to relevant staff, enabling prompt intervention and corrective measures to ensure safety and compliance.

By combining Milesight's IoT sensing and connectivity devices with RDM's powerful BMS platform, the hospital benefits from a robust and integrated solution that bridges IoT data collection with centralized facility management. This ensures the hospital environment remains within safe parameters at all times, supporting better care outcomes, equipment preservation, and operational efficiency.
