The Challenge: Red Light Running Remains One
of the Deadliest Intersection Violations

Running a red light is among the leading causes of severe intersection crashes worldwide. These violations often result in high-speed side-impact collisions, causing serious injuries and fatalities to drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists.

According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), 1,086 people were killed in red-light-running crashes in the United States in 2023, while more than 135,000 people were injured. Nearly half of those killed were occupants of other vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, or other innocent road users.

Key Statistics

  • 1,086 fatalities caused by red-light-running crashes in 2023
  • Over 135,000 injuries annually
  • Nearly 50% of victims are not the violating drivers
  • Fatal red-light-running crashes continue to increase in many urban areas

More Than Just Red Light Running

Accurate signal status recognition is the foundation of reliable enforcement. Milesight Red Light Enforcement Camera supports two independent signal recognition methods that can be used individually or simultaneously.

Sigal Docking

Directly connect the traffic signal controller through 4-channel external input interfaces.

Benefits:

  • Highest reliability
  • Suitable for complex intersections
  • Immune to lighting conditions
  • Direct synchronization with signal controller outputs

Video-Based Signal Analysis

AI algorithms automatically recognize the ON/OFF status of two traffic signal groups directly from video streams.

Benefits:

  • No physical wiring required
  • Lower installation cost
  • Faster deployment
  • Greater flexibility for retrofit projects

Milesight Red Light Enforcement Camera supports multiple trigger conditions that can be configured independently according to local enforcement requirements.

In the Lane: Vehicle remains inside the lane during the red phase.

Vehicle Front Crossed the Stop Line: Vehicle front bumper crosses the stop line.

Vehicle Tail Crossed the Stop Line: Entire vehicle passes beyond the stop line.

Reached the Trigger Line: Vehicle reaches a predefined trigger position inside the intersection. Independent trigger lines can be configured for: Straight movement, Left turns, Right turns.

Red Light Running

Milesight Red Light Traffic Camera accurately detects vehicles that cross the stop line after the traffic signal has turned red.

By combining real-time traffic signal recognition with vehicle trajectory analysis, the camera automatically captures violations and generates comprehensive evidence packages, helping authorities improve intersection safety and streamline enforcement operations.

False Start Detection

Milesight Red Light Camera can identify vehicles that begin moving before the green signal is activated and cross the stop line while the signal is still red.

To ensure clear differentiation from standard red-light-running violations, the generated evidence snapshots explicitly indicate the corresponding signal status and event type.

This helps enforcement agencies accurately classify violations, reduce disputes, and maintain fair enforcement practices.

Red-Light Grace Period

To support fair and accurate enforcement, Mileisght Red Light Violation Detection Camera provides a configurable grace period ranging from 0 to 3000 ms.

This adjustable tolerance helps accommodate vehicle braking inertia and real-world driving conditions, effectively reducing false violations caused by unavoidable stopping delays while ensuring a more reliable and human-centered enforcement process.

Multi-Snapshot Evidence Package

Milesight Red Light Violation Detection Camera automatically captures a series of key moments throughout the violation and generates evidence snapshots embedded with essential information such as timestamp, location, license plate number, and traffic signal status.

A typical evidence package includes six images:

Four Violation Progression Snapshots: These sequential snapshots clearly illustrate the vehicle's movement throughout the violation process, including:

  • Vehicle remaining within the lane before crossing the stop line during the red phase
  • Vehicle front crossing the stop line
  • Vehicle rear crossing the stop line, indicating the entire vehicle has entered the intersection
  • Vehicle reaching a predefined trigger line within the intersection

One Vehicle Overview Image: A full-view image of the vehicle, enriched with attributes such as vehicle type, brand, model, and body color.

One License Plate Close-Up: A high-resolution license plate image that ensures accurate vehicle identification and supports reliable enforcement.

Full Violation Video Recording

In addition to static snapshots, Mileisght Red Light Enforcement Camera automatically records and stores a high-definition video covering several seconds before and after the violation event. The video provides a continuous view of the entire process, including:

  • Vehicle approaching the intersection
  • Traffic signal transition
  • Failure to stop before the stop line
  • Vehicle crossing the stop line and proceeding through the intersection

By presenting the complete sequence of events, the video serves as an intuitive and tamper-resistant record that complements the captured snapshots.

A Closed-Loop Evidence Framework

The evidence package combines the strengths of both snapshots and video recordings. While snapshots preserve critical moments and key details such as license plates, signal status, and vehicle positions, the video provides a continuous visual narrative of the violation.

Together with automatically embedded metadata such as GPS location and precise timestamps, they form a robust, closed-loop evidence chain that ensures every enforcement decision is transparent, verifiable, and supported by clear proof.

Detect Signal Failures Before They Disrupt Traffic Flow

Unlike conventional red-light enforcement cameras that focus solely on violations, Milesight goes a step further by continuously monitoring the operational health of traffic signals, helping authorities detect issues early and maintain safe and efficient intersection control.

Supported Signal Fault Detection Types

Milesight Red Light Enforcement Camera automatically identifies abnormal signal behaviors, including Light Up Simultaneously, where conflicting signals are illuminated at the same time; All Light Off, indicating a complete signal outage; and Light Flashing, which detects irregular or unstable flashing patterns. These fault types are continuously analyzed in real time to ensure accurate detection of signal malfunctions.

Real-Time Events Response

Once a signal anomaly is detected, Milesight Red Light Enforcement Camera immediately generates alarm events and can push notifications to third-party management platforms. It also triggers video recording to preserve on-site evidence and supports maintenance teams with rapid diagnostics, enabling faster response and minimizing downtime.
