In the age of sustainability, it has become a global trend to transform a building or even a city and a ranch into a smarter, greener and healthier space. More and more industries are utilizing innovative technologies such as LoRaWAN and IoT solutions to breathe new life into everyday life. In this episode, we are pleased to welcome back our experienced partner Carlos Roman, IoT Product Manager at Monolitic, and Daniel Cascante, IoT Business Manager at Monolitic, to unpack behind stories of projects in Spain.
Facility management is one of the key areas where IoT smart solutions are starting to make an impact and it's encouraging more people to get involved. One of the reasons probably is that easy and simple IoT devices can work perfectly and bring differences?
A: I would agree and maybe you can understand better with one of our cases in smart restroom. In a sector where operational efficiency and resource optimization are key to ensuring high-quality service, the integration of IoT solutions into cleaning management represents a strategic shift. Digitalization through the implementation of smart sensors allows interventions to be carried out only when they are necessary, optimizing resources and offering a more efficient approach in an increasingly competitive market.
Our client had the challenge of implementing a technological solution that would optimize the cleaning management at their clients' facilities. The lack of real-time information on the use of spaces made it difficult to efficiently plan cleaning tasks, which could lead to unnecessary or insufficient interventions. This represented a significant challenge, especially in an industry where operational efficiency and service quality are key to differentiation.
With Milesight WS202 PIR & Light Sensor and WS156 Smart Scene Panel, the facility managers have effectively solved these challenges in ease. The small occupancy sensor WS202 utilizes a powerful combination of PIR detection and brightness measurement, allowing it to determine an indoor area's occupancy or vacancy status effortlessly. It also allows users to define a custom threshold, enabling it to determine whether a space should be classified as bright or dark. The customized e-ink in the WS156 can present different content, allowing the owner to collect customer feedback on the cleanliness of the restroom with a simple push of a button. In this way, the owner can optimize cleaning efforts based on customer feedback.

In the view of sustainability, HVAC systems represent a significant portion of energy usage in buildings, especially for facility managers in office building, shopping malls, hotels and etc. Monolitic has successfully grounded a project in tourist apartment regarding HVAC efficient. Could you share more with us?
A: In a market where differentiation and optimization of resources are key to success in tourist apartment businesses, having environmental monitoring tools has become a competitive advantage. The ability to monitor environmental conditions in real-time not only improves the guest experience, but also optimizes energy consumption and reduces operating costs.
Our client Nexmachina had a project for the management of tourist apartments, where the challenge of implementing a technological solution that was scalable, flexible and affordable was a challenge. One of the main challenges was the lack of an efficient system for remote control of the air conditioning. Without real-time data on guest behavior and proper monitoring of heating and air conditioning usage, it was difficult to ensure comfort, avoid excessive energy consumption, and prevent unwanted use.
With this starting point, Nexmachina sought to implement a solution that would allow it to intelligently monitor and manage the environmental conditions of each apartment, optimizing energy consumption and improving the guest experience. The Milesight WT301 Smart Fan Coil Thermostat is a state-of-the-art thermostat for air conditioning systems with fan coils. This solution was implemented in several tourist apartments, to optimize heating and air conditioning control with programmable schedules.

Public health is always a topic of concern and we know that Monolitic has helped with the Legionella prevention program at airports. Given that airports are complex places for public transportation, can you share what challenges the program faced?
A: Our client is a company specialized in the integration of water treatment systems, with extensive experience in airport projects. The growing demand for technological solutions for Legionella prevention in airports has driven the need for advanced monitoring in these environments with extensive air conditioning systems and hot water circuits.
The challenge arises to ensure efficient and continuous monitoring of key water quality parameters such as free chlorine, pH, temperature and flow rate. However, the airport infrastructure presents significant challenges, as the separation between zones and restrictions on cabling deployment make it difficult to implement conventional monitoring systems.
The client was faced with the need to implement a wireless monitoring solution that would allow the collection and transmission of water quality data at the airport without relying on extensive cabling. The airport infrastructure, with widely dispersed areas and cabling installation restrictions, made the use of traditional solutions unfeasible, both due to their technical complexity and high installation costs.
In addition, any solution adopted had to meet demanding technical and operational requirements: the system had to be compatible with the Modbus RTU communication protocol used by the measuring equipment, ensure effective coverage over long distances and operate with optimized energy consumption. In addition, data transmission security had to be a priority to avoid risks to the integrity of the information.
Finally, given the critical environment in which it would be implemented, the devices used had to comply with current regulations and have appropriate certifications for use in airport infrastructures.
What solutions you offered to help the customers to meet all these requirements in the complex situations?
A:To meet the challenges of the project, a private LoRaWAN network was implemented, which allows data transmission over long distances with low power consumption and high security, essential features in an airport environment. The solution was based on an infrastructure consisting of Milesight's UG65 gateways, airport-approved devices that provide wide coverage and enable stable communication via LoRaWAN, and the integration of Milesight's UC300 nodes, capable of reading data via Modbus RTU and transmitting it efficiently over the wireless network.
Thanks to this implementation, the system now enables real-time monitoring of key water parameters, ensuring regulatory compliance and facilitating the prevention of health risks.
Now, for the operators it is accessible to real-time data, better monitoring remotely and centrally. The project works well in not only cost reduction, which eliminating of the need to install complex and costly cabling, but also increased flexibility, bringing possibility of relocating sensors without modifying the existing infrastructure. In the long run, regarding on scalability, the LoRaWAN network can be expanded to include other monitoring systems at the airport.

We’ve learned that livestock management is vital, increasing needs for smart IoT solutions to increase efficiency. Has Monolitic deployed relevant projects? If so, could you share more with us?
A: Sure. The livestock sector faces multiple challenges that require comprehensive modernization to ensure sustainability and efficiency. Among the main concerns are efficient resource management, increased productivity and the need to address animal welfare and food safety issues.
In addition, the growing demand for sustainable practices has led the industry to seek solutions that reduce the environmental impact of livestock farming. Therefore, the implementation of IoT technologies has become a key strategy to meet these challenges and ensure success in an increasingly demanding and competitive market.
Our client, a company specialized in the intelligent control of livestock, had the challenge of optimizing cattle management through a technological solution that was efficient, scalable and easy to implement. Their solution is based on the use of sensors placed on the animals' collars, where they allow farmers to monitor the location and health status of their cattle in real time. These robust and long-lasting devices alert livestock farmers via WhatsApp about dangerous situations, such as calving or injuries, providing peace of mind and efficiency in their daily work.
This sounds like an IoT solution to a cattle monitoring and management solution. Did the project encounter any obstacles in practice?
A: The lack of a reliable communication system to collect and transmit data in real time represented a barrier to effective monitoring. Without proper connectivity between the tracking devices and the management platform, it was difficult to obtain information on herd behavior, detect anomalies in time and optimize decision making.
The Milesight SG50 Ultra Low Power Solar LoRaWAN® Gateway facilitates connectivity in remote areas, combining solar power, a built-in battery, 4G communication and remote management. It enables wireless deployment and standalone operation in harsh environments. In addition, it acts as a communication bridge, collecting data from multiple sensors and sending it to the cloud via cellular or Ethernet connections. Equipped with high-performance processors and LoRaWAN, the gateways ensure robustness and efficiency in large-scale networks, even in rural environments with poor cellular coverage.
